Some Elements from ‘Cat
in the Rain’ Short Story by Ernest Hemingway[W11]
‘Cat
in the Rain’ is a story that is very short by Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961),
published in his first collection in 1925 years In Our Time. Hemingway wrote ‘Cat in
the Rain’ for his wife Hadley when they stayed in Paris. She wanted to get a
cat, but she said they were too poor. ‘Cat in the Rain’ perhaps inspired by a
certain event at 1923 years when, stayed in Ezra Pound’s home in Rapallo,
Italy. Ezra Pound (a well-known cat lover). Hadley be friends with a little
wild cat.
Characters
in story ‘Cat in the Rain’ are the American wife, who is the main character in
Ernest Hemingway's "Cat in the Rain," and her husband, George, who is
a secondary character, are the most significant characters. The hotel owner,
the hotel maid, the café waiter, and a man in a rubber cape are all secondary
characters. The fact that the American woman does not have a name or a job
gives the impression that she mostly serves as a modern wife. She behaves
throughout the story in a way that reflects her frustration with not having a
marriage and lifestyle that are more typical, which suggests that she does not
find this to be satisfying. The story does not develop George as a character.
His overall attitude portrays him as selfish and possibly even misogynistic, as
he is more concerned with his own wants and needs than those of his wife. The
hotel owner is a symbol of traditional gender roles and old-fashioned values.
He treats the American woman with respect and chivalry.
The American woman
The protagonist of Ernest
Hemingway's 'Cat in the Rain' is an American woman who is
on vacation in Italy with her husband George. The fact that they
travel to Italy suggests they are financially prosperous. The woman speaks
a little Italian: "'piove', said the woman." (l.21)
There is little reference to the outward characterization of
the American woman in the story. Hemingway
sometimes calls her the "American girl" (l.
41), suggesting that she is young. She has short hair, which was
fashionable among young women in the 1920s: “George looked up and saw
her neck cut short like a boy's. (R.57)
Interior characterization
The woman's short
hair also adds to her inner characterization as it suggests
that she likes to be fashionable. When we first meet
the American, she wants to rescue a cat she sees crouched
under a table in front of the hotel to protect
herself from the rain. It shows that the woman
is caring and compassionate. However, she insists that she get the
cat, suggesting that the cat has a
special meaning for her.
George
George is the
husband of the main character in Ernest Hemingway's "Cat in
the Rain". He is an American man who likes to travel and
read - throughout the story he is lying in bed
reading a book. Like his wife, he speaks some
Italian: "'Avanti,' said George." (l.75)
There are no references to the outward characterization of him in the
story.
Interior characterization
George's internal
characterization is brief and constructed through his words
and demeanor and in contrast to the demeanor
of the hotel owner.
At first, George seems to love it as he offers to go outside and fetch the
cat himself: "'I'll do it,' her husband offered from
the bed." (r.15)
The hotel owner
The hotel
owner - or "Padrone" - is
a supporting character in Ernest Hemingway's
short story "Cat in the Rain". He's probably
Italian but knows a little English: "'Si, Si,
Signora, brutto tempo. It's very bad weather.' (line 22)
The outward characterization of the innkeeper is briefly
constructed by the words of the narrator: "He was an
old man and very tall" (line 20); "She loved his
heavy old face and his big hands" (l. 25).
These masculine traits suggest that he symbolizes a type of
masculinity to which the American woman is attracted and which she is
unlikely to find in her husband.
Internal characterization
The
inner characterization of the innkeeper is built through
his actions. He is nice to the American woman: "The
woman went downstairs and the hotel owner stood up and bowed to her as
she walked past her office." (l. 19) We are told that he
is "very serious" (l. 23)
Setting
The primary
physical setting is the Italian hotel where the couple is staying, surrounded
by beautiful scenery. The beginning of the story details the physical setting:
“Their room was on the second floor overlooking the sea. It also overlooked the
public garden and war memorial. In the public garden there were large palm
trees and green benches”. (ll. 2-3). The hotel is just one of the few hotels in
the area, which suggests that the place is popular with tourists: "The
artists loved the way the palm trees grew and the bright colors of the hotels
overlooking the gardens and the sea.” (Fig. 5-6)
Themes
Frustration
The American wife, protagonist of
Ernest Hemingway's story Cat in the Rain, is a woman dissatisfied with her life
and, consequently, with her marriage. The story shows that her husband George
likes to read and travel, while her wife wants to settle down.
There
are some explanation about some elements in short story ‘Cat in the Rain’ by
Ernest Hemingway.

[W11]I
suggest that the essay can pick one of the best issues or elements to be
discussed further.
For example:
“The Importance
of Settings in Hemmingway’s Cat in the
Rain”
This title will enable exploring more the roles of
settings (of place and time) in the story: how important it is for delivering
the theme, the plot, and the other elements.
So, focus on one topic to get the better essay.
Good luck, Boys!
