HALAL
The Big Business of Muslim Consumers
Halal is an Islamic
term that defines what is permissible for Muslims under Islamic law. There are
things that are prohibited and not recommended, the most famous of which are
halal products. But there are also halal banking, tourism
and dress codes that can affect every aspect of life. Halal
products are an important economic driver now and in the future. The Halal Mark is an advantage for
a constantly
growing group of consumers.
But how reliable are the labels? This is not a religious message, but a
specific marketing strategy. Now it's not about faith, it's about
money. The halal economy is
becoming
more and more prominent and there are more and more products on the shelves of supermarkets
and restaurants.
We live in a very
heterogeneous society, so eating something like halal hot dogs is normal at some point and of course will enrich someone.
Halal plays not only an economic role but, a sociopolitical one too. I think
anything to do with Islam is currently seen as a provocation. The halal
industry is often met with hostility and criticism. There were comments like
“oh now there won`t be beer and curry waste only iram and suchuk”.
I agree to this. Not all halal labels are halal, there may be fake
labels and business-only
halal labels.
